Bulgarian fortress, strategically situated on the Danube (q.v.), which Basil II (q.v.) captured in 1003 after a siege of eight months. It was restored to Bulgaria (q.v.) in the early 14th century and was occupied by the forces of Hungary (q.v.) from 1365-1369. For a while in the late 14th century, the Ottomans (q.v.) allowed Vidin to became a semi-independent Bulgarian principality before it was conquered by Bayezid I (q.v.) in 1396.
